I am very fascinated by the contentions presented by a British educator and policy adviser. His name is ken Robinson, who used to be a college professor and now dedicates his time to educate people about what he thinks should be the new standard model of education.
Ken Robinson poses the idea that our current system of education is based on an industrial model. And I agree with him. The public system of education was conceived during the enlightenment period, which overlaps with the industrial revolution. This was a truly “enlightening” idea, even though many disagreed. But it’s true. Bells at schools are still used, which is very similar to lunch breaks postmarked by industrial jobs. But anyway, the argument is that we need to change are current system of education. “It’s not enough to reform, we need to innovate.” I believe that the entire infrastructure needs to be redesigned.
For example, the current system has greatly helped many, but for the majority it hasn’t . Our current educational system, and this applies to any place no matter what country you find yourself in, prioritizes its educational curriculum; the way they do it’s almost universal. They place math and science at the top, then come the politics and the linguistics and at the bottom is the arts, theater, and humanities. I genuinely believe this is rather wrong. I mean, like Robinson said, we all have bodies and can dance and sing. We are also human and thus social beings. Then why is sociology not taught as rigorously as math and science? This is a question that needs to be addressed promptly because our current educational system is telling many talented students that they are “stupid” if they can’t do math, and to not do music because they won’t be a musician, and so on.
